HFQ headlined at the opening night of the 2004 CARNEGIE INTERNATIONAL in Pittsburgh, PA. The band serenaded all the fine artistes and patrons in attendance, including Robert and Aline Crumb (Crumb's work is featured in the exhibition). The band also made an appearance at Pittsburgh's coolest live music venue, CLUB CAFE. Trading our in our scrapple for lobster rolls, HFQ headed north to Camden, Maine, to give a concert at the CAMDEN OPERA HOUSE as part of the 2004 Pop!Tech Conference, where we feasted on the heady talk of the next Renaissance. Believe it!
Pittsburgh Bound
The band makes its debut in the city of steel this week with shows at CARGO CAFE and the CARNEGIE MUSEUM OF ART!
"We Are Destroyed" Update
Howard's music theater piece based on the on The Donner Party tragedy has been completed at long last and is ready to move to the next level. After last May's hugely successful workshop outing at The Pasadena Playhouse (as part of the Lincoln Center Directors Lab West festival), Howard spent the summer retooling the text, emerging with a final draft ready for production. DLW co-founder Andrew Sachs is on board to direct, and King's Fountain (the good people behind HFQ's 2000 debut abroad in Paris) has signed on in support of the project. The team is currently in talks with several theaters about a production in early 2005-- stay tuned!
Jazz and Standards
Fans of HFQ's jazz and standards repertoire will be happy to know that Howard appears in jazz trio format at New York's prestigious KNICKERBOCKER CAFE on November 26 and 27, featuring Ian Riggs on bass and Victor Lin on piano and violin.
Joe's Pub
Having played in so many of New York's greatest venues large and small, people often ask us the question "what's your favorite place to play in the city?" For intimacy, sound and theatricality, it's hard to beat Joe's Pub, where the band has been a regular since its first residency there in the summer of 2001. Don't miss it when Howard and the band return on Saturday, December 11 at 7:30. Tickets have just gone on sale and you can reserve your seat now by calling 212-260-2400. As always at Joe's, you can expect the unexpected.
